Given the amount of press that Lolo Jones has been receiving, we’re all forgiven for thinking she was a shoe-in for the gold in London – but the great thing about the track is that it’s the ultimate meritocracy. You can’t fake the funk, if you know what we’re saying.
Just minutes ago, at the 2012 Diamond League meet in Oslo, Norway, Jones finished fourth in her heat in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.04. She still qualified for the finals so she’s got another shot to excel against the international community, but as this article from NBC Olympics details, based on season best times the virginal (really), hurdling superstar is currently ranked 12th… In the US.
Now, to Lolo’s credit, she’s running on way less than ideal circumstances, according to her Twitter feed yesterday:
And in the grand scheme of a season none of these meets really matter compared to an Olympic trials or the Olympic Games themselves. In three weeks, the top three women at the Olympic trials in the 100m hurdles will get their ticket to London. Until then, all of these times matter as a gauge for fitness, but that’s about it. Still though, this is a story to keep your eyes on.
