The excellent site ‘TradingFloor.com‘ has got a huge data-dump of economic facts about the upcoming London Olympic Games. Of course there are the usual mind-blowing stats: opening ceremonies will cost an estimated £6,750,000 per hour to produce, the new Olympic village in East London cover 246 hectares…. *snore*
Just when you can’t pour over any more dry statistics presented without context (we exaggerate – it is pretty interesting) you stumble upon this little doozy:
Durex, owned by Reckitt Beckiser Group (RB), will distribute 150,000 condoms to the 16,000 athletes in the Olympic Village in London.
Boom! Now we’re talking! 150,000 condoms for just 16,000 athletes! That’s over nine condoms per athlete for a 16 day competition – that’s a lot of Olympic love.
Now, the amount of ummmm… ‘training’ that goes on inside the Olympic village is an oft-discussed and well-known fact. It makes sense, too – thousands of 20-somethings in the prime physical shape of their lives walking around in the summer heat – now that’s a steeplechase, amirite!!! As each day of the Games goes on, the environment inside the village becomes more and more festive as athletes finish their events and and begin to celebrate (or mourn) their Olympic performances. Those athletes are looking to blow off some steam! *cue sexy baseline…*
So, that’s one visual to keep in mind as we sit back and watch the 2012 Olympic Games this summer. Go USA!!!
It was hard to come up with what picture to use for this post. Here are a few other options:
